One business. Several different deadlines.

Do not treat your year end as the due date for every return or payment. Build a schedule from your actual official records, then agree who will prepare, approve and submit each item.

Private limited companies

For established private companies, annual accounts are generally due at Companies House nine months after the financial year end. The usual Corporation Tax payment deadline is nine months and one day after the relevant accounting period ends, while the Company Tax Return is generally due after twelve months.

First accounts, changed periods and companies subject to instalment-payment rules need separate checking. Confirm your own dates rather than applying this summary automatically.

Self Assessment

For the tax year ending 5 April 2026, the usual online return and balancing-payment deadline is 31 January 2027. The usual paper-return deadline is 31 October 2026. Where notification is required, check the 5 October 2026 deadline. Payments on account may also create a 31 July payment date.

HMRC notices, exceptions and your own circumstances can affect what is required. Check the official record and allow time for payments to arrive.

VAT returns

The usual online filing and payment deadline is one calendar month and seven days after the VAT period ends. Different arrangements can apply, so check the dates in your VAT account and allow time for the payment method you use.

Digital reporting, payroll and other obligations

This is not a complete compliance calendar. Making Tax Digital can involve additional digital records and updates for eligible sole traders and landlords. Payroll, pensions, CIS and confirmation statements may require their own schedules. Ask for these to be included in a review where relevant.

  1. Record the accounting or tax period and the official due date.
  2. Set an earlier date for supplying records and resolving queries.
  3. Agree who reviews, approves, files and pays.
  4. Keep submission receipts and payment confirmations.
